Missouri River Fly Fishing Report
“Hot in…..so hot in herre! (on the Mo’)
Current Flows: 3,820
Weather Forecast: Mid to Upper 90s throughout the week
Hatch Report: PMD, Caddis, Tricos!
Hello Summer! Dang, it’s hot in Craig, Montana. Forecasting 90s for the foreseeable future. Important to note, the Missouri River isn’t under any hoot owl restrictions but there is a sort of self regulation going on where folks are getting off the water from 2P to 3P and then giving the fish a break until about 7P in the evening. The good news is there are a TON of rising fish to be had. Just a flat out amazing dry fly run on the Mo’. There are a lot of tricos in the morning and some PMDs mixed in there and then just massive clouds of caddis in the evening especially in the canyon.
Nymphing: Zebra Midge, Purple Weight Fly, Crayfish, Frenchie, Spanish Bullet, Rainbow Warrior, Green Machines,
Look to go 2-5 feet deep with no weight. We’re starting to throw zirdles, crayfish with some green machines, zebra midges and frenchies mixed in.
Dry Flies: Hi-Vis Rusty Spinner, Hi-Viz PMD Spinner, D&D PMD Cripple, Parachute PMD, Cornfed Caddis, Missing Link, Double Duck Caddis, Hopper, Cluster Midge, Crayfish, Hi-Vis CDC Trico Spinner
Epic hatches on the Missouri right now! The pic below is an evening caddis explosion. Starting around 8A there are rising trout everywhere and they pretty much last all day. Make sure you get your drift right, float your fly first to the rising trout.
Streamers: Lil’ Kim, Game Changer, JJ Special, Sparkle Minnows, Flash Fry Zonker, Kreelex, Docs Articulator, Sparkle Yummy
Streamers are producing. A couple guys came into the shop this week and said they started early and caught a ton of fish.
